The object of this book is to give an account of such properties of a gas as can be explained by supposing the gas to consist of molecules in motion. The first three chapters are mainly historical, explaining why scientists came to believe that a gas consists of molecules in motion. Next follow chapters discussing a variety of properties of a gas; finally, a series of applications of the general theory are set out.
