The visitor to the Vatican Museums finds himself before a far more complex entity than their name would lead him to suppose. He is aware that he is going to see some "Museums" in the true sense of the term, that is. buildings which house collections of works of art and culture, of various ages from ancient to medieval to modern and contemporary, some of which have with time achieved special fame. He expects also to find "Monuments", buildings belonging to the architectural complex of the Apostolic Palaces, famous for their artistic quality, their historical importance and sometimes even their "curiosity" value. Generally, on the basis of these preconceptions, the visitor will come away from the Vatican Museums with nothing more than the impression, more or less satisfied, of all that he has finally been able to "see", from the Sistine Chapel to the Belvedere Apollo, from the Laocoon to Raphael's Transfiguration, from the mummies in the Egyptian Museum to the Borgia Apartments.
