This book pays tribute to the Soviet generals, to Zhukov, Koniev, Chuikov and the others and even to Stalin, so mistaken before the war and in its earlier stages. But in a larger sense it is a monument in words and pictures to the ordinary Russian men and women, to all the peoples of the Soviet Union, the plain citizens whose sacrifices made victory possible. In the Kremlin on 24th May 1945, in the presence of his great commanders, Stalin hailed the Russian people over all the others in the Soviet Union. Another people, he said, might have turned against their government in its hour of peril but 'the Russian people did not do that... and made the sacrifices which made certain the defeat of Germany. The memory of those sacrifices may burn only dimly today outside Russia but this volume and its remarkable photographs, many shown here for the first time, should light a candle whose flame will long illuminate our consciousness.
