He studied and briefly practised law, but abandoned it and turned to journalism. His interest in agriculture led him to visit and write about many agricultural exhibitions. Due to the influence of his younger brother John, he became interested in Australia and they cowrote the Australian Hand-Book in 1848. It's success led the brothers to begin a weekly journal; Sidney's Emigrant's Journal (1848-1849) which then became a monthly, Sidney's Emigrant's Journal and Traveller's Magazine (1849-50), which was edited by Samuel.
