They were the surprise winners of Copa Libertadores de America in 2004, mainly due to the performances of Juan Carlos Henao and Jhon Viafara. The club was founded in 1959 after the fusion of the old well known clubs from the 1930s. The team is the last Colombian team that has won a major international tournament to date. The team had the longest dry spell between titles in the Colombian league; they waited 53 years between their 1950 and 2003 championships.
