In this work, the author studies contact structuresvia adapted Riemannian metrics. The main observationis a relation between characteristic surfaces ofcontact structures and zero sets of solutions tocertain subelliptic partial differential equations.This relation makes it possible to derive, under asymmetry assumption, lower bounds for the volume ofthe manifold supporting overtwisted or virtuallyovertwisted contact structures arising from a certainclass of invariant curl eigenfields. Further, it hasimplications in the energy relaxation of this specialclass of fluid flows. Specifically, the authorprovides a counterexample to the conjecture of Etnyreand Ghrist posed in their work on hydrodynamics ofcontact structures.
