High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A legal aid system was introduced in New Zealand in 1969 to provide Government funded financial assistance to those who are unable to afford a lawyer. Legal aid is available for criminal charges, civil issues and family disputes that may end up court. It is also available to assist with the settlement of claims at the Waitangi Tribunal. Since its inception, the cost of the service to the taxpayer has grown considerably. In 2012, the system was subject to a three month critical review by Dame Margaret Bazley who suggested a number of changes (including fixed fees for most criminal cases) which were rapidly seized on by the Government wanting to cut costs. Some legal professionals were so concerned about the impact of these cuts they contested the recommendation for fixed fees in the High Court.
