An Indexing Language (IL) is an artificial and technical language consisting of descriptors using controlled vocabulary and ordinal numbers for the systematic arrangement of books in a library. Available ILs are based on English and also available in French, German, Chinese, Italian etc. Though India is rich with 122 languages, where 22 are in the 8thSchedule of the Constitution, there is paucity in development of Indexing Languages in Indian languages. The hypothesis that the concepts of indexing language can be analyzed with knowledge of linguistics is demonstrated. It is found that indexing language structure is identical with that of natural language.
