The Australian Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (ASCEH) was given the task of organizing the 8th International Congress of Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine on behalf of the International Society of Hypnosis. The Congress was sponsored by University of Melbourne, Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Dental Medicine and Surgery. The Australian Society was founded in 1971 and has been involved in training more than one thousand members. The Congress has stimulated the growth and interest of hypnosis and encouraged training programmes, co-ordination and co-operation, increased standards, research, and clinical applications of hypnosis. The ASCEH is extremely grateful to the International Society for their support and encouragement. This volume continues the tradition of publishing the proceedings of triennial major world congresses of hypnosis.
