Camille du Locle, director of the Орerа-Comique, is credited with suggesting to Bizet the composition of his next opera, Carmen. The story line originated in a widely successful novella by Prosper Merimee, who himself had expanded upon a dark tale of an Englishman's adventures with Spanish gypsies. On March 3, 1875, the curtain at the Орerа-Comique rose on a grand opera that featured so many novelties that it brought new life to the genre itself. Not only did the text written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy tell a story of ill-fated love and human imperfection, but it did so with a quality of realism usually absent from the form. In its first performance, Carmen contained spoken dialogue instead of the traditional musical recitatives. The score also kept pace with the passionate and violent feelings expressed by Carmen and Don Jose.
