INTRODUCTION There are several different species of Skate and Rays that inhabit the waters around the UK and in this book we will look at the 7 most common species you are most likely to catch, Blonde Ray, Common Skate, Cuckoo Ray, Small-eyed Ray, Spotted Ray, Thornback Ray and the Undulate Ray. With the exception of the Common Skate all these Rays can be found in sandy areas mixed with rocks and kelp from 10m to 60m. Common Skate are found mainly in Scotland and Northern Ireland in depths from 5m of up to 600m. Obviously in these depths they are only caught on boats but if you are more adventurous they are great fun caught from a kayak. You have to be very careful when handling Skate and Rays, they have very powerful jaws and care should be taken when removing the hook. Also remember that it is not just the Thornback Ray that has spikes, all Skate and Rays have razor sharp spikes and prickles all over their bodies which can very easily draw blood.
