The present book represents a monograph of basic electronic phenomena in unipolar (one-carrier) solid-state devices. The theory of device operation is accompanied by certain results of computer simulation and by experimental data. Technological and circuit details are beyond the scope of this book. The background of this text is given by papers published in specialized journals. The references used are acknowledged at the end of each chapter and in figure captions. The bibliography is, of course, far from being exhaustive. A historical presentation was not attempted. Problems are suggested at the end of most chapters. The high-frequency behaviour of unipolar devices was the subject of our monograph entitled "Transit-time effects in unipolar solid-state devices" published in 1974 by the same firms.
