Biology posits chronology; that is, chronology is the basic system of all biology. When I was in high school, I was deeply impressed by Thomas Mann's Der Zauberherg and especially by the first part of Chapter VI. in which the hero, Hans Kastorp, reflects on the meaning of time. He says that time is the greatest mystery. It is never substantial, but always almighty. Present is no more past. Here is no more there. Without doubt, time is cyclic. The past is always repeated in the present. He ponders the means by which the finite existence is harmonized in the universe. The thoughts expressed in this passage influenced my decision to study psychology and physiology and ultimately led me to the study of timing in the living system.
