Nutrition is a science that examines the relationship between diet and health. The science of nutrition attempts to understand how and why specific dietary aspects influence health. Many common diseases and their symptoms can often be prevented or alleviated with better nutrition. A good diet must contain all the nutrients one needs for good health and proper function. Nutrients are used in an organism's metabolism that changes the food we eat into the tissues and organs of our body. Poor health can be caused by an imbalance of nutrients, either an excess or deficiency, which, in turn, affects bodily functions cumulatively. Although some functional foods may provide health benefits, no single food is a ‘magic bullet’ for maintaining health and disease. Consuming a balanced diet consisting of a variety of foods is the best way to maintain optimal health.
