Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is one of the most beautiful and commercial important flower crop. It is a major cut flower in the florist trade ranking next only to rose and chrysanthemum in the world. It occupies prime position in the international cut flower trade. It belongs to the family Caryophyllaceae. Carnation, apart from producing cut flowers can also become useful in gardening for bedding, pots, borders, edging and rock gardens. Carnation plants are half hardy herbaceous perennial. The flowers are solitary, terminally formed; the petals are broad with frilled margins and the calyx cylindrical with bracts at the base.
