Located in the Vologda Region of northern Russia, the church was decorated with an outstanding collection of frescoes and altar icons painted by the legendary Dionysius. Time has unfortunately left its mark in the form of superficial losses to the frescoes, while the icons have since been removed from the iconostasis to the reserves of several museums. Many of them were inherited by the Russian Museum in St Petersburg. This publication addresses the icons of Dionysius now belonging to the Russian Museum. It reproduces many original frescoes from the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, as well as copies taken by Russian experts in the 1920s.
