He graduated from Harvard College in 1807. During his theology studies, he began to doubt the truth of the Christian religion, which he critiqued in a book entitled The Grounds of Christianity Examined by Comparing the New Testament with the Old (1813). Edward Everett published a rejoinder to it, to which English responded with his book Five Pebbles from the Brook (1824).
