Not illustrated. 1898 Excerpt: ... weight consisted of the heavier rail-section in lengths of 12 feet, the lighter in 12-foot lengths and also in 18-foot lengths. The first and last lengths, weighing 140 lbs. and 150 lbs. respectively, were reckoned as two to a mule-load, or three of the second lengths. The practicability and cheapest method of transport were discussed with experts before the rails were ordered; and one object in view in so varying the weights was to utilize the varying powers of the animals comprised in ordinary mule-trains. Half a load or " carga" (of 300 lbs.) is the usual limit of weight, but certain parts of the rolling-stock weighed necessarily more than a full load.
