He then describes an outbreak of cholera, and the sad scenes of suffering and death that rapidly ensued, though medicine was freely supplied; and he afterwards details the particulars of an awful catastrophe which happened two years before. Some parts of the mines contain sulphate of iron, which ignites from pressure and damp. Smoke being observed to issue from the lower galleries, the people all removed, and a man reported that the mines had taken fire. The shaft near was immediately filled with rubbish, which was all that could be done, and they waited the result of the subterranean burning.
