Causes of maternal deaths include; haemorrhage, infection, obstructed labour, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and complications of unsafe abortions. Severe parasitic infections during pregnancy contribute significantly to the degree of anaemia in pregnant women. This increases the risk of increased maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Control of parasitic infections before or during pregnancy, particularly malaria and intestinal helminths, will improve health outcomes in pregnancy for both the mother and child.
