Old Riga

Old Riga, the heart of the city of Riga, lies on the very bank of the Daugava River whose lofty bridges carry a steady flow of modern traffic, while its water mirrors slender, green-coppered ancient church spires. The squat wall of the old Teutonic Order castle and the tapering roofs of Old Riga's medieval houses can be seen from afar. The Old City covers a territory of only about 0,4 square kilometers - a very small part of Riga, yet it contains centuries of old history. Each building, each winding little street, each square, each cobble stone has a story to tell. The facades of the houses display dates of distant times and ancient coats-of-arms. Here and there a quaint stone mask grins down at you from a cornice. Windcocks rear from steeply slanting roof-tops. Deep cellars send up a whiff of the past... The streets of the Old City resound with the footfalls of numberless tourists who stop to listen as the ancient stones tell their old tale.
