Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: 6 Songs without Words for Guitar

Mendelssohn wrote his 48 "Songs without Words" in the years 1829-45 (The first book, composed in 1829/30, was entitled "Melodies for the pianoforte"). The final 11 pieces were first published after his death. On of the books was dedicated to Clara Schumann, who had considerable success with the "Spring Song". It was difficult, however, to persuade Mendelssohn to play these miniatures himself. "If there was too much vermin of this kind in the world", he said modestly, "everyone would finally regret it". And yet they became his most popular pieces. As there is a lack of good 19th century music for guitarists and as the 6 "Songs without Words" which I have selected have a modest, restrained and lyrical character which makes them most suitable for guitar arrangement, I hope to meet with a favourable response from guitarists. Givenskill and understanding on the part of the player, some of the pieces seem to me to sound even more beautiful on the guitar than they do on the piano.
