This reader contains a selection of works by the famous Soviet short-story writers Paustovski, Platonov, Gaidar, Antonov, Nagibin, Aitmatov, Shukshin, Rytkheu and others. The book is entitled "Roads", and this central image runs through all the stories in the collection. In some stories the road holds interesting encounters for the characters, in others it is the path of life along which the heroes pass, either by choice or by chance. The stories will help to acquaint the foreign reader with the life of Soviet people in various parts of the country: in Moscow and Leningrad, in the Siberian taiga, in the steppelands of Altai, in Chukotka, in Turkmenistan and Kirghizia. The stories have been adapted to eliminate linguistic and semantic complexities and arranged according to their subject-matter and level of difficulty.
