In the previous volume the Tang Priest and his disciples arrived in a kingdom, where Buddhist monks were forced to do all the hard labour because three evil Taoist priests had been honoured by the king as the Teachers of the Nation. Monkey defeated them in magic arts. The king realized his error and ordered both Buddhism and Taoism to be honoured. Battle in the River of Heavn, with seventy colour illustrations, tells how the Tang Priest is captured by a monster when crossing the River of Heaven. His disciples fight the monster, but he refuses to surrender their master. Then the Bodhisattva helps them catch the monster and changes him back into a goldfish.
